A big leap forward to an NDIS

A big leap forward to an NDIS

Posted April 30, 2012

Today thousands of people with disabilities and their carers heard that a National Disability Insurance Scheme is imminent.

Carers Australia welcomes the Government’s announcement that it will fund its share of the initial stage of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in the May Budget.

The Government has also committed to starting the roll-out of the NDIS from mid‑2013, a full year earlier than the Productivity Commission had suggested.

Carers Australia President Tim Moore said, “The NDIS has the capacity to make real and lasting change for people with disability by providing quality care and support. It will also improve the lives of carers and their families.

“Carers Australia looks forward to continuing its close working relationship with Government to ensure that the best outcomes can be achieved for people with a disability, families and carers,” said Mr Moore.

“Family carers are the backbone of the Australian disability system and need to be seen as equal and valued partners. Carers Australia urges Government to work closely with them in the development and implementation of the NDIS.”

Carers Australia applauds the courage and determination of key politicians across all parties in bringing the NDIS to this point.
